What is The Leaf?

The Leaf is a new local newsletter for Boiseans built around hope and connection.

Subscribing gets you:

  • A Monday events stockpile, full of lightly curated events for the next two weeks.
  • A Friday Weekend Countdown featuring 3 things in any category, 2 ways Boise relates to the national conversation, and 1 thing to feel hopeful or grateful for.

Supporting (through a $5, $10 a month subscription, or a tip) gets you:

  • A Thursday crossword puzzle.
  • A chance to write in whatever's making you feel hopeful or grateful.
  • A spot at the front of the line for upcoming projects.
  • The satisfaction of supporting independent, grassroots media.

Who is Blake?

I'm a writer and editor from southern Idaho. I graduated from Boise State University in 2022 and wrote the Hey Boise newsletter for four years, before it was folded by its parent company, City Cast. I'm grateful for that time at City Cast, but I wanted to give writing a newsletter about Boise another try, on my own terms. So I created The Leaf.

A little more about me: I'm working on a novel, I bake things to take a break from writing, and I get back into running roughly every three months. You can find me poking around bookstore shelves and otherwise spending time with the Boise friends who have become beloved family.

The Leaf is my earnest attempt at writing about the news and culture of our city and times with heart and hope. If you have the means, I could use any support you can provide.

A note about AI use

I will never use generative artificial intelligence as written content in The Leaf.

As a one-person operation, I have found small ways to use AI tools — primarily to create an interactive html link each week for the crossword. Any AI use I find in the future will be limited to administrative work, never impacting the actual content I write.
